Ingredients
1 1-pound loaf French bread
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened (optional)
8 ounces thinly sliced fully cooked ham
6 ounces sliced Provolone cheese
3 tablespoons Thousand Island dressing
4 ounces thinly sliced turkey
4 ounces thinly sliced salami
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seed
Steps
1.Preheat the oven to 400°.
2. Using an electric or a serrated knife, slice the bread horizontally into 3 equal pieces.
3.Spread the first piece with half of the softened butter or margarine (if using). Top with the ham, Provolone cheese and half of the Thousand Island dressing.
4. Place the second piece of the bread on top. Spread with the remaining softened butter or margarine (if using).
5. Top with the turkey, salami, the remaining Thousand Island dressing and the top slice of bread. Place the loaf on a baking sheet.
6. Stir together the 2 tablespoons melted butter or margarine and the sesame seed. Brush the mixture over the top and sides of the loaf. Cover loosely with foil.
7. Bake in the 400° oven for 10 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for 5 minutes more. Slice to serve.
Tips:
To roast sesame seed, spread in a thin layer in a shallow, ungreased baking pan. Bake in a 350° oven for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring once or twice. Sesame seed tends to become rancid quickly because of the high amount of oil it contains. Store sesame seed in the refrigerator or freezer.
This is a recipe that adapts well to individual creativity. You can substitute other regular, low-calorie and nonfat dressings, as well as other meat and cheese combinations.
If you prefer a cold sandwich, you can also add lettuce, sprouts and/or slices of tomato, onion and/or green sweet pepper.
